Nebulizer Billing: Rent-to-Own (Medicare, TRICARE, Medical Mutual)

Why is my nebulizer billed as a “rental”?
For Medicare and TRICARE, nebulizers are paid under a capped rental policy. That means the plan pays monthly rental claims for a limited period—up to 13 months—even though you’re using the device at home.

Do I have to return the nebulizer after the rental period?
No. After the capped rental period is complete (typically the 13th month of continuous rentals), ownership transfers to you. You do not need to return the device, and you won’t be billed rental for it again.

Does this also apply to Medical Mutual?
In most cases, yes. Medical Mutual often follows Medicare-style rules for durable medical equipment. Many plans use the same rent-to-own (up to 13 months) approach. Because benefits can vary by plan, please check your specific policy or call us for help.

Why do plans bill it this way?
The rent-to-own structure spreads out payments and ensures you receive service and support during the first year of use.

Are supplies included in the rental?
No. Supplies (like tubing, masks, and nebulizer cups) are billed separately because they need periodic replacement for safe, effective use.

Anything else I should know?
Coverage, copays, and timelines can vary by plan and medical need. If your coverage changes or monthly billing pauses before ownership transfers, rules may differ. We’re happy to review your benefits with you.
